LPGA Tour
So, this week's controversy comes from the LPGA Tour and focuses on the armchair golf fan. As Lexi Thompson had a comfortable lead and was cruising towards taking home the first Ladies Major of the season, she was pulled up for an infringement in round 3….on the 13th tee of round 4!!
Someone, somewhere in the world, probably called Richard Head, emailed the LPGA Tour to inform them that TV footage from round 3 proved that Lexi had broken a rule. As she marked her ball, she replaced it roughly 1 inch away from where it originally lay. She was pulled up for this and given a 2 shot penalty and then a further 2 shot penalty for signing for an incorrect score.
Did she break the rules? Yes. Should she have been pulled up 24 hours later by somebody watching the tv, and not by the Tour? That's for you to decide. I, personally, find it very disappointing and scenarios like this do nothing to encourage people to take up the game. TV footage regularly shows mistakes in other sports that aren't picked up at the time, and no retrospective action is taken. It still feels at times that golf is in the dark ages and that we are trying to drive people away.
Lexi showed tremendous strength to birdie the 13th and still make it into a play-off where she was beaten by a birdie from Ryu So Yeon. We are trying to move with the times in this industry as much as we can. Unfortunately we still get let down my so many things.
Now that I've had my moan, let's move on to more positive news…
First Medal of the Year
Saturday saw our first medal of the year and we had a great turnout for so early in the season. 126 members played and quickly had to get used to being back on the white tees!
The weather was decent enough and the scoring was even better, please see the results below:
