Foremost Spring Workshop
It's been a busy few weeks, both with events at the club and personally for myself. As well as preparing for the new season, I went to Dublin on a stag do, Amsterdam for a final break before another busy summer and wrote and prepared my co-best man speech for my brother's wedding last weekend (which, fortunately, seemed to go well!). It's been a busy few weeks, but it's good to get back to working full hours and helping to contribute to an enjoyable atmosphere around the golf club that means you are all looking forward to your next visit to the club.
In amongst everything else in March, I attended the annual Foremost Spring Workshop at Gleneagles. These events are incredibly informative for people in my position and it's always great to bat around ideas with other club Pro's and find out what is, and is not, working at their clubs.
One thing that stands out from these seminars is that all golf clubs face similar challenges and it is a tough era for the industry. However, our passion to better our clubs proves how committed PGA Professionals are about providing a first class service and looking after their members. Please never hesitate to pass on feedback (negative or positive) about the experience you get at Tulliallan. We are not a closed shop, we want to take feedback on board and improve what we offer you. We care about you, your game and what you want to achieve in the sport. The same cannot be said about online retailers or the larger off-course retail stores.

Online bookingWe are finally venturing into the 21st century this week and introducing online booking for the Wednesday Medals. By the time this has reached your inbox, we will have already gone live for the first medal being played on Wednesday 3rd May. If you have not, for whatever reason, received the email specifically regarding the details on this, please speak to myself or Scott in the Pro Shop.
I first worked with online booking for medal play 7 years ago. Tulliallan was the first time since 2010 that I went back to working with pen & paper and it was quite a shock to the system! There is an apprehension about making change and we hear about those that don't have computers. I can assure you that this system will work well and you will soon question why we weren't using it sooner!

Spring preparation
The green staff have continued their Spring preparation on the golf course. As well as continuing to cut and shape the course, there has been tining and scarifying being administered to the greens. Scarifying helps to reduce or remove thatch and moss.
Thatch is a real problem for greens because it can prevent the water from rain showers getting through to the roots and it also locks up valuable nutrients and oxygen. After tining and scarifying, have been top dressed and brushed and then rolled. This work is invaluable to having good greens all year round.
Practice area
Bob Stewart has again been busy on the practice area. Bob volunteers to look after the practice area and keep it well-manicured. This help is invaluable to the greenstaff, myself and all those that use this facility. I would urge you all to make the most of this area. As you all know, practice makes perfect(ish).
