This week we take a look at how one golfer’s eleven-year wait for victory finally came to an end on the PGA Tour and dive into some incredible numbers behind the Woman's PGA Championship. Whilst we are at it, we thought we would also do some digging into why worn grooves on your wedges can be seriously impacting your game.

Competition news

Lamert and Campbell Stoddart Opens

We had a great turnout of nearly 250 golfers last weekend for the Lamert & Campbell Stoddart Opens. The golf course received very positive feedback and we had a lot of home players in the prizes which is always nice to see. Well done to Dougie Kyle for winning best nett in the Lamert and to Stevie Adams for winning best scratch in the Campbell Stoddart.

The ladies had played for the Margaret Penman Trophy on Friday. Please see the results below:

The bonus ball was won by Mark Hill - £40 shop credit.

Lucky number 17 for Reavie

If Chez Reavie plays the lottery this week then we recommend one of his picks is 17.

The American claimed the Travelers Championship by four shots with a total 17-under-par but despite shooting a joint back-nine record at TPC River Highlands on Saturday with a 7-under 28, a charging Keegan Bradley had his lead down to just one with three to play come Sunday.

Lucky number 17 came to the rescue though as Bradley shot a double bogey at the par 4 seventeenth whilst Reavie sunk a birdie at the same hole to stretch the lead to four where it stayed.

It was Chez Reavie’s second PGA Tour win and first since claiming the Canadian Open in 2008 – a tournament he won with a total score of (yep you guessed it) 17-under par.

Spooky.

11 up as Green takes major glory

Australian Hannah Green took a wire to wire victory at the Women's PGA Championship thus creating a truly remarkable statistic – The last eleven women’s major tournaments have seen eleven different winners.

If that wasn’t enough, the last four winners have all been aged 23 or under!

Coming into the tournament after a missed cut in her prior event, few gave Green a second glance until she stormed to the top of the leaderboard with a 4-under 68 on day one.

There she stayed despite a wobble through the middle section on Sunday with bogies at 9, 11, and 12 to hold off defending champion Sung-Hyun Park by a single shot on 9-under.

England’s Melissa Reid fired in a total six-under par to finish in a tie for 3rd and record her best major finish to date.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
